When I was six years old, my parents immigrated to the United States, and I remained in China with Lao Lao, my grandmother on my mom’s side of the family. My grandmother was a good Communist, extraordinarily giving and selfless. She was also a tiny lady with anger issues–she said that I was fat and mentally ill and enabled my grandfather’s alcoholism. I was so angry with her that I would bite her. I loved her, but I also didn’t trust her.
